Why do you think, at one of the very first meetings between Mac and JZB, JZB tries and terrorize her by taking one big lick on Mac's neck?

The strong hold on her ribs and the threats I get, but the licking is a little odd.

Also when he threatens her (poor Mac) that he can arrange for her to meet the Unseelie is he talking about tossing her outside in the dark or something else?

Oddly hot! :anim_naughty-vi: I read that a couple of times (10) and I think at the beginning he's really just trying to scare the crap out of her and get her to leave it alone and go home. I think the licking thing is just part of that and Karen's way of dangling the vampirical carrot under our noses. I don't think he's a vampire though.

Until the in her neck part when he was wanting to save her I was leaning towards him being somehow affiliated with were wolves but then the neck thing made me wonder about JZB being a vamp... Unseelie metals & relics all are like frostbitten cold, sucking all the life out of living things.
As for immortal aka fae, I believe he is a part of Formorian fae or fae changeling anyhow. He would have to have some bit of human in order to tattoo himself in order to minimize repercussions of dealing with the DARK ARTS. I don't think a fae would be able to tattoo itself at all. Not enough body matter to hold the ink...
Druids ?!!!
Cian was a druid dabbling into Dark Arts that's why he was tattooed, and the Mackeltar druids were not tattooed at all. They were the Keepers of the lore & Ritual Keepers for the Tuatha De...So not all of the druids are marked. I don't think he's this either...just gut. The Unseelie shades would not avoid a mere druid only. They don't seem to avoid a lowly Null aka Mac.
KMM I think mentioned JZB was a Basque/Pict/Celt to focus out into another folklore so that she could add another mythical creature that Basque culture seems to embrace.
This creature walks with Skin Walkers & Beserkers (To Tame a Highland Warrior)...Vilkacis. Very similar to a werewolf but gets this way by being cursed or damned by magic only.

I'm with Jo on this one, it's part of the intimidation, you know, look how easily I can do what I like with you! And, I could be wrong, but doesn't the Kurgen lick someone's face in the movie Highlander as part of his scare campaign? So while licking the neck might be to lead you down the thinking of vampires path, for me, the lick is more the scare the crap out of the pretty barbie kind-of-thing.

Jo's post also mentions the tattooing and it wouldn't "stick" to fae skin. Probably covering old ground here, but, if the fae aren't really human, just look human, then why couldn't they look like they had tattoos?

And as for JZB's jewelery, I always felt like it's purpose was to reduce his effect on the "poor" mortals around him, tone down the do-me factor of the royal fae?

Good ?, I think he was trying to scare her by being unpredictable and bold and threatening. It makes me think of the Matrix where Keanu Reeves character is given the choice of pills to take. Once he makes his choice, he can't go back.

The reason I say this is at the end of DF, after JB rescued Mac and was healing her, he kissed her and said something in a language she didn't recognize. Someone wondered in another post if he was saying bonding vows, recognizing her as his future mate? Intriguing to speculate! Perhaps he had that "Mine!" realization that so many of the Highlanders had and recognized it early on. Perhaps his lick was his trying to control himself and failing, being so close to her? good point there! I forgot about the other families! If this is the case, that would explain why he comes off a little (ok maybe an understatement) dark. I'm not entirely sure it truly fits but it would be an intriguing plotline.

I think it was pure intimidation - he grabbed her, slammed her back against his body, crushed her ribs, then licked. Just noticed this thread, but I gotta agree with Jo on this one. Any man taking liberties of an intimate nature that he hasn't been invited to take would piss me off! I also think that it sends the message that he will do what he wants with little regard to what she thinks.

And on another note, if you haven't read Lara Adrian's series, pick them up, if you like the BDB you'll like these too. And they're much better than that bad romance you were reading. :wwink:

To answer the original post, when i read it i thought it was either a scare tactic or a reference to what JZB is (I still don't think he's a vamp.) I think he's a wolfie or something similar - would explain the reflexes and stealth - at least IMO anyway!

I was just skimming through DarkFever again and noticed on page # 328 of the paperback, a part that jumped out at me. I have read that a billion (hahaha) times already and never paid any attention to it, but this time it just went - hey!!! So in the second paragraph (where JB and Malluce are facing off in the warehouse on LaRuhe) it says, " He and Malluce were facing each other, pacing a tight circle. The vampire's eyes glowed and his fangs were fully extended." So my question is (knowing what we now know about Malluce - cosmetic enhancements on his teeth) how did the "vampire's" eyes "glow" and how did his fangs "extend"? Was she seeing Malluce or was she mixed up and seeing something (someone) else? Not that I want to think that JB is a Vampire, just one of those things that make you go hmmm? :skeptical:

I am thinking it may be a clue as to what Jericho may be. Also and I actually am leaning toward this idea more is that he wanted to threaten her to leave and by holding her how he did and licking her it would be like a sexual threat. Which would make most women leave while they could naturally. lol

I was thinking that first, it was an intimidation thing.Second I think that where he paused in his talking to do it, he was actually 'tasting' her pulse, soto speak. Most likely it was racing like mad. And lastly, I think that despite the fact that JB is constantly calling her a little girl, he likes what he sees, if you know what I mean. :wbiggrin:

A Lamb in a City of Wolves ... that's what he called her. And then the lick along her jugular vein. It was a clear allusion to either vampirism or werewoflism. I think it's a clue about who/what he is. It goes with the moment in the cave in BF where he exposes her neck then starts breathing real hard, as if with regret.

I definitely think Moning dangles the whole Barrons/Vampire thing under our noses. Even in the scene where Barrons takes Mac to Malluces house there is what I believe is a reference to it:
"I looked back and forth between them. Something nagged at me, something I couldn't quite put my finger on. It was a thing I stupidly failed to put my finger on until it was too late. Before long, I would understand that nothing had been what it seemed that night, and the reason Barrons had faced-off so coolly with the blood sucking Master was because he'd gone in with the quiet assurance that, no matter what happened, he would walk out alive, and not because he had Malluce by the proverbial fiscal balls"

I think that whole scene and her though process is a big key. The whole "cursed" idea is a good theory, but for some reason I still think that Barrons could be a vampire or an idea closely related to one....

I never really got the vampire vibe from JZB, not sure why I really never even gave that a thought till I started hanging out with you ladies (and gents).

All I can think of from that scene and the ones around it is that he also was hanging around her inn and much later when he talks about knowing her scent. I think he was getting a "taste" of Mac to help him recognize her anywhere so that he could find her when he wanted to. Oh I think he recognized something kindred in her immediately and that was an instinctive reaction to being so close to her, he just couldn't help himself.
