View Full Version : The mirror in Alina's apartment
OK I was doing a reread again and I missed something the first 100 times. When Mac goes to Alina's apartment she says that everything has been destoyed but she specifically mentions the mirror has been smashed.
I was wondering am i going crazy or does anyone else think that it could have been a part of the silvers and someone was using it to spy on Alina?
OK I know I am looking way to hard for clues but I am going to go off the deep end before September if I don't do something.

i didnt think about that till now, but it could very well be. why else would someone smash a mirror? you cant HIDE anything in them.... not like a picture frame... the only other reason (besides either a portal or "spy"glass) would be out of anger...

Hm.. very good question and I haven't even thought about it *ashamed* ^^
I don't know if this is right but.. why not? In one way it.. yeah.. it really could be and... when you reread it it seems obviously. I can't wait to find out^^

Now that's something to ponder...did he give her the mirror, and if he did, was it so he could keep an eye on her? Or maybe use it to imprison her like Circen was? :skeptical: We don't know their full capabilities, but we do know they can hold someone indefinitely. We also know they could (at one time) help someone move from place to place or realm to realm. They all seem to be linked, but breaking one does not seem to damage the others. Circen's was broken but the others in LM's LaRue house seem to be fine. Geez, more questions....I can't wait for answers! :th_nod:

...as being broken, the framed picture of a seaside cottage was specifically mentioned as the only thing that was not broken. Now it doesn't say it's a painting, so this could very well be a framed photograph from one of Alina's albums.
I wonder if the seaside cottage is going to come in to play in later books? On the map in BloodFever it shows a dotted line/ journey of some sort going to sea side places...?

Shewolfe, I was wondering about that too! Found that it was very strange that it wasn't broken. Thought that there might could be something hidden in there. I can't remember...did Mac check?

Good theories now I have to reread that scene again cause I totally missed the sea cottage picture thing.

She never did get a chance to check b/c the new tenant had taken up residence and Barron's had moved all Alina's things to the store. I don't think she's gotten around to remembering it, and she hasn't had a chance to go through Alina's things yet either...
I thought I remember a post saying it may be the hiding place for Alina's journal, but I don't think so, myself.

I can't remember...did Mac check?Y'know, I remember that she was looking behind the picture in hopes of something like a wall safe or cubby hole. I also remember that the picture fell on the bed and didn't break. I don't remember it being a 'picture', I thought it was a painting, but I don't have my book so I can't look it up. I'll have to go back and check it out later.
If I had realized it was a picture, the first thing I would have thought of was to check to see if something was hidden between the print and the matting and backing. I'm just suspicious that way. I wonder if it's in with her sister's stuff that Barrons packed? I wonder if it's important? Aw, he-- I'm gonna be crazy before the new book is released! :snick:

Actually, I also noticed that the seaside picture was the only thing not broken. I seem to remember it came off the wall and fell on the bed ???
I was waiting for Mac to open the frame and see if any clues had been tucked into it, but she didn't.

I was lurking around going thru threads and read this again....and another thought crossed my mind. We know that LM Darroc trashed Alina's apartment, or had it done. He had her photo albums tossed on his closet floor, which is where Mac found them. We assume he's frantic to find her journal since she may have left a clue or two about where the nasty SD is hidden.
We also have to assume that whoever trashed the apartment smashed the mirror, but it begs the question as to why the picture was left alone. Odd, to go into a room and do a thorough search, trashing all but one item. Not the work of a trained professional, to be sure. But the mirror, you're right, I'm still suspicious of the mirror. :skeptical:

I never thought about that. Maybe she knew that Mac was gonna look for her diary so she left her a clue to its where abouts? Just a thought. I'm willing to bet that Barrons might have it. He's sneaky that way.

If he has it he would be pissed if it held clues to where the book was LOL on the other hand it would be kind of funny the answer being under his nose and all. :biglaugh:

lol...yeah he would but he may not know how important it is because i dont think Mac mentioned the diary to him...did she? although i cant imagine that he wouldnt have realized what it was. wether it was a clue or the diary itself. and yes it would be really funny if it was right under his nose like that

Just a thought, but maybe the reason Christian is trying so hard to talk to Mac is because he has Alina's journal. Maybe he was holding it for Mac to come and get and he does not realize what he has. Or Alina told him not to give it to anyone but Mac?

Just for fun, here's (2) more or maybes: Maybe Christian will be the one who ends up with Mac and he already senses it but Mac is safer not knowing yet. He probably knows she focuses better in battle without thinking of any emotional relationship for now OR There might be something in the diary that might anger Mac so much she might become careless and put herself in danger trying to get revenge.

Not sure I "see" Mac with Christian. He's not quite "grown" into his MacKeltar heritage just yet. According to KMM - he will though in his own book and I don't think that it will include Mac. I like the supposition that I read in another thread that for Christian it might just be Tessa (Adam's daughter). And yes, the 8 rules for dating ADAM's daughter would be funny as all get out. At the end of the IH Tessa was 4 or 5 and that was about 5 or so years ago, so she is about 10 now. Christian is somewhere around 20'ish (plus 2 or 3 years). Eight more years Tessa will be 18 and Christian will be more of an age that he will have enough experience and knowledge to really be a MacKeltar hero. The timeline seems to fit. And it would be a worthwhile MacKeltar story that brings back a few of our beloved characters.
The idea that Alina might have went new age with her journal is possible, although I can't see it. For me, hand writing in a journal is alot more satisfying than typing on a laptop. So I just can't seem to reconcile myself with the electronic journal thing. But that is just me. I really do think that Alina's journal is still going to be in the hand written format.
I do think that Barrons is arrogant enough to go through Alina's things IF he thought that there was something in them that would help lead him to the Dark Book. But I do not think that he has done that yet. I don't think he thinks that there is anything there. I do feel that Mac will find a clue as to where the journal is once she goes through Alina's things. Could be like suggested, something as simple as a URL or a recorded message to Mac to direct her to where the written journal is. Or there are directions/message on the back of the seaside picture that was hanging on the wall in Alina's apartment. Could be that is where her journal is, at that seaside cottage and Mac just hasn't realized that the picture itself is the clue.
I have absolutely no evidence for any of this. It is all just my thoughts. But I hope that I am close on something. :skeptical:

i have re-read both books at least 5 times each and still missed a lot of vital clues. however regarding Alina's journal i read the synopsis on Bantamdell ad it said that in Faefever Mac receives a torn page from Alina's journal and the story proceeds from there. i don't know if its already been mentioned by someone else.just thought I'd point it out.I'm so impatient for September.

In one of the books JZB says "a few of us know it was a vast 'network' of mirrors" when he was telling MAC about the mirror CIAN was in. i think the UK made them and CRUZ cursed them???

After they were cursed they were used for evil, case-in-point, Cian.
I don't have my book handy, but it has been bothering me -- the picture of the cottage, were we not told that there was a space in the back for a key??

Actually I thought that same thing! Mac called them Tabh'rs.
The Tabh'rs have only been mentioned once in Darkfever so I'm wondering if one will turn up in Shadowfever and if someone used it to spy on Mac or Barrons or Alina.

On one of my many re-reads I was wondering where that picture came from. If everything breakable had been broken before Mac's first visit how come the picture is not broken on her next visit?
Was it there all along? Or did someone put it there for Mac to find?

I was wondering that too - since it was the only thing not broken - - - maybe it was put there after the apartment was trashed - like you said as a clue for whoever came after.
I like the thought about the mirror having been a Hallow - for LM to be able to watch - or just pop in on Alina whenever he wanted to. Maybe it was one and Alina figured it out and smashed the mirror to shut down Darroc's Peep Hole.
GREAT POST :th_Clap5:
okay I'm assuming that the mirror was smashed because the "FREAKS" wanted to make sure that ALINA"S spirit once released from her body and would not trap itself inside the mirrors and wander into the silvers...
I believe that all mirrors/and silvers are magical carriers of spirits... just a BIZZARE theory here..
