I'm thinking more like a trip to the museum and then dinner at a nice restaurant with a cake or cup cakes with a candle for each of us.

OK, my b-day is the Jan 19...
I live in New Orleans so the staying out all night, been there - done that
The bars close basically whenever they want. There are some that close early and some that stay open 24 hours. The Dungeon doesn't open until midnight so they're open LATE.
Yes you can walk down the street with alcohol, just no glass. When you go to dinner, you can ask for a "go cup" to take your drink with you if you're not finished (yes I mean alcohol). While at Pat O'Brien's you can buy the drinks in souvenir glasses and when you leave, bring it with you and at the door they'll pour your remaining drink into a go cup (Plastic cup) and put the glass in a box. Just remember to wash out the glass when you get back to the hotel because they don't rinse it out. There are no times when you can't buy alcohol. when we were in Atlanta, the little coffee shop had a sign of when they sell alcohol on Sundays; if the store has alcohol for sale they'll sell it as long as the store is open
According to a couple of gay friends, there is nothing like SRs here no full nudity but IMHO you will find things that really will be "interesting". Things you'd never expect to see. You will be able to shop at "toy stores" and see all manner of things. Truly a decadent place.
I don't do karaoke and I've been drinking on Bourbon Street since I was in high school so I don't know what I'll be joining y'all in doing for the b-day celebration but I'll be around.
Anyone coming in town on the weekend, I recommend doing the Haunted History/Vampire tour, and try to get Jonathon as your tour guide. Awesome tour. Also there are lots of things to do so I recommend researching what you want to do and when.
